Reflection and Routine: The Secret Weapon of Successful Singers
Reflection and Routine: The Secret Weapon of Successful Singers
June, 2024
We all know the drill – vocal warm-ups, scales, technique, mastering those tricky parts. But there's another key ingredient to becoming a phenomenal singer – taking the time to reflect.
Every day, my day starts with a cup of tea, a quiet moment sat on the patio to engage in some focused reflection. It's more than just enjoying the sunrise (although that's a bonus!). These 20 minutes allow me to mentally prepare, review lesson plans, and ensure I'm giving my students the absolute best support.
This daily ritual got me thinking – how can reflection benefit YOU? You might be thinking, "Isn't that just planning my practice session?" Well, it's about more than just scales and repertoire. It's about creating a space to absorb everything that's happening in your vocal journey – the successes, the challenges, and everything in between.
Now, some of you might be concerned that reflection turns into worry, and this can be the case. A little concern is normal, but it shouldn't consume you. The goal is to use reflection as a tool for growth. Ask yourself:
What breakthroughs did I have in my last practice session?
What areas need more attention?
Am I approaching my singing goals in the smartest way?
If not, what questions should I ask my coach to approach my practice more effectively?
By taking this time to reflect, you gain valuable insights and can tailor your practice sessions for maximum progress. Remember, reflection isn't about dwelling on negatives. It's about self-awareness and setting yourself up for vocal success.
Grab a notebook and find a quiet space. Take a few deep breaths and let your mind wander. Think of something you’re working on vocally. Jot down anything related to your singing – any technical challenges, emotional breakthroughs in a song, even performance goals. Take these jottings to your next vocal session - your vocal coach, choral director, singer teacher will thank you for them. Being able to get inside the mind of our singers makes the job a lot easier and productive.
How has reflection impacted your singing journey?
